Genetic Drift: Founder’s Effect Read and create a poster 1. Click on the link below to access the website www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.gen.foundereffect/genetic-drift-and-thefounder-effect/ 2. Click on “Support Materials” then "Background Essay" 3. Read the information from the essay and take notes (in whichever format you choose) over the main ideas and supportive details in the passage. 4. Create a poster using the information from essay. The information should be complete enough to teach the class about the passage and how it relates to evolution. 5. Be sure to include photos or drawings so that students can see what polydactyly and dwarfism in the Amish community looks like! 6. On a separate sheet of paper answer the summative questions below and attach this paper to your poster. Summative questions: 1) Ellis-van Creveld syndrome is more prevalent among the Amish than in the rest of the world because of which mechanism of evolutionary change? 2) The essay says that the founder effect is an extreme example of genetic drift. Use your imagination and think of a scenario that would also be genetic drift, but NOT the founder effect. 3) What would happen to the genetic makeup of the Amish community if they began to intermarry outside of their group? Which mechanism of evolutionary change would increase? 4) We don't usually talk about natural selection as a mechanism for evolutionary change in modern Homo sapiens. Why not? III.
